It always knows.

I rarely think about it, but I think I’ve been taking my sense of smell for granted.

Sense of smell is very important in parenting. I realized this fact this week. My whole family has been sick, and I truly can’t smell anything.

The upside to this is I can’t taste anything either, so I’ve lost three pounds without trying.

The downside to this is that we keep getting surprised – by poop. I never realized how much I relied on my olfactory skills to tell me when The Goon Squad was poopy. But, three times this week we have been getting the kids in the bath tub and have been taken completely off guard by a poopy diaper. It is very disconcerting.

I think this is also the cause of Ian’s diaper rash. I guess I should be making visual checks more often, but for the first 17 months of his life, my smelling system had worked just fine.

  1. But can you tell WHO has pooped by the smell? Scott can, it’s quite disconcerting.

  2. I can too. But only because its baby poop and toddler poop. I’m sure that will change in time.
