This Too Shall Pass

Every time I drive over the Potomac River into Maryland, I think about George Washington.

I live really close to the Potomac River. I’m assuming this will stop happening soon.

I guess when I lived in Orlando I eventually stopped rolling my eyes every time I drove past Disney World.

  1. At least you aren’t paddling across it in a boat right? And I suppose your trip across isn’t quite as important, say a trip to Target maybe vs. making history?

  2. Funny, Sarah,

I suggest rolling your eyes when you go over the Potomic so that everybody can see…the whites of your eyes.

As for Orlando, I reserve a different gesture for my trips near Disney.

  3. Michelle – Yeah, I was just going to Allison’s house.

  4. Here in Memphis, you have to get used to seeing billboards everywhere proclaiming “Elvis Lives! Visit Graceland!”

  5. In the immortal words of Mojo Nixon…

    Elvis needs boats!

  6. I guess it could be worse. I always think about Robert Downey Jr. climbing into people’s beds and Anne Heche showing up on my lawn.

  7. Your Mother says:

Good God Sarah – where did you find that picture of George????

  8. I had that problem too when I first moved here. Then I chaperoned my son’s 4th grade class trip to Mount Vernon. The tour took about two hours, in the dead of winter and most of the tour was OUTSIDE! Trust me, if you do this, you will get your fill of George Washington and the rumination will end. If you cannot find a 4th grade class of your own to chaperone, I can always let my son’s school know you want to chaperone before the winter is over.

  9. Do what I do. Think of that plane that crashed into the Potomac.

  10. Frank Sucks says:

Of course, the picture (and your thinking) is of Washington crossing the Delaware, but why let facts get in the way of a good blog post!!

  11. Frank – you have an excellent point.

  12. I’m not sure I can be friends with you if you are going to make obscene gestures at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Of course I’m also the one who will look up while I’m at Target and go “Oh hey, PALM TREES!” like it’s cool and exciting.

So I shouldn’t mock too much about the Washington thing. (Yeah but it was the Delaware not the Potomac…I had to read it a couple of times to figure out why the Potomac made you think of Washington).

  13. Pssst Sarah, if you change the picture to Mount Vernon, you can save face! Mount Vernon is on the Potomac.

  14. Huh. Where are you? We’re pretty close to the Potomac as well! And frankly, you can’t travel a mile without being reminded about some dead guy around here!
