Why Padma, Why?

March 30, 2009 | Now I've Seen Everything

Seriously, why would Padma do a Hardee’s commercial?

Facebook and Twitter are Blurring All the Lines

March 28, 2009 | Friends, I Just Logged On My Internet

Once upon a time I had friends from high school and friends from college.

Then I had high school friends and college friends and work friends.

Then I had high school friends, college friends, work friends, neighborhood friends, friends from the twins club and eventually blog friends.

You get the picture.

Sometimes we would have a birthday party and your work friends would meet your regular friends and maybe a mom or two that I knew from twins club. It was okay. A little weird, but pretty normal.

Enter blog friends.

At one point in my life, my blog friends were pretty much contained on the internet. I would comment on their blogs, they would comment on my blog and occasionally there would be an e-mail exchange.

Then I moved.

When I moved here I only knew a handful of people that lived in the Washington DC area, but I knew that some of my blog friends lived here. Suddenly, some of my blog friends were real life friends.

It was sort of weird, but it still wasn’t a huge deal. Most of my regular friends knew that I was a blogger and internet dork and they didn’t make fun of me.

Well, they only made fun of me a little bit.

Then things started getting really weird. I made friends with my neighbors. The regular, Can you make sure nobody breaks into my house when I am out of town? Led to questions like Where are you going? And I had to answer with things like A women’s blogging convention in Chicago.

As a blogger, you understand that as mainstream as it seems, a lot of people have no idea what bloggers do.

If you tell a person who has never read a blog that no, you aren’t a political pundit, you write about your life and your kids and pop culture and sports, they will look at you like you have 10 heads.

Or they will laugh because they think you are joking.

But when an 18 wheeler drops an SUV off on your street and a news crew comes to film it you can’t just pass it off as a hobby anymore.

Then twitter comes along and things start getting really weird. I follow a mom from preschool. Sure, she is a friend, but I met her at preschool.

Then I friend her on Facebook. Suddenly, other moms from preschool start showing up in my “people you might know” section.

I like these people, so I friend them too.

But I often post links to my posts on Facebook. And links to my MamaPop posts.

Sometimes my links are harmless.

Other times they are not.

And now sometimes they come up in real life. Like at class coffee’s at preschool.

10 minutes ago I just friended a teacher from my kids school. Facebook has forever blurred the lines. I’m not even sure how to categorize my friends anymore. We are through the looking glass and I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. (more…)

What I Need Least

March 26, 2009 | I Have Issues, Randomness

A few minutes ago I thought to myself: The last thing I need in the entire world is Cool Ranch Doritos.cool_ranch_doritos_bag

Then I thought about it again. While the fact hold that I really don’t need Cool Ranch Doritos, are they the thing I need least in the world?

No.

There are things I need less.

I have no use for (and nowhere to put) any livestock. I wouldn’t know what to do with a helicopter and if someone angel_lladro_flute_nakedwere to give me one of those fancy Lladro porcelain figurines I would probably just sell it on ebay and either march my new money right over to the Apple Store or send it  to Visa.

There are things I don’t need because I have more than enough already –   like cans of tomato soup or Million Mom March bumper stickers.

I have an entire box of Million Mom March bumper stickers in my laundry room. Don’t ask why, but if you want one (or 50) just send me your address and I will mail them to you.

There are things I don’t need because they are bad. I don’t need to get sick. I don’t need a family tragedy.  I don’t need to lose my job, but those aren’t really things you don’t need as much as horrible things that you don’t want to happen.

I’ve thought about it a lot now and I don’t know what the one thing would be that I need least in this world, but it probably isn’t Cool Ranch Doritos.

What is Another Word for Thesaurus?

March 25, 2009 | Parenting, The Goon Squad

We taught our children about synonyms recently.

It is a pretty cool exercise. Not only are they learning vocabulary they are also really thinking about the words and how close two words are in meaning.

Plus, when one of them says “Hey Mommy! Yummy and scrumptious are synonyms!” in front of somebody I look like an awesome parent.roget_webster_thesaurus

The problem now is Claudia is obsesses in finding another word for synonym.

Does anyone have an answer for this?

Because I looked it up in my thesaurus and there wasn’t anything in there.

Scissors Cut Paper. IN YOUR FACE, ADAM!

March 24, 2009 | Parenting, The Blue One

“Mommy? Are they playing Rock, Paper, Scissors?”

“I have no idea what you are talking about.”

__

Like most people who decided that they wanted some fine art in their apartment when they were in their early 20’s, along with a Dali poster, we bought this Michelangelo detail print from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Ian thought that they were playing Rock, Paper, Scissors.

And God was winning.

Of course, he had no idea that these guys were God and Adam.

They say that art can be whatever you interpret it to mean.

While Ian’s interpretation might not be as awe inspiring as The Creation, playing a game that mind-numbingly boring and losing could explain the look on Adam’s face.
