Questions for You: Music

Ah, sweet muse Euterpe.

music_staff

In my youth I was obsessed with music. First pop music, then metal, then heavier metal, for a while it was choral pieces and opera… I just love music.

I remember asking my mom about songs that were popular when I was little and she said she didn’t listen to the radio when my brother and I were small. I thought she was insane, but now I get it.

My kids are now four and I am working my way back into first love – music.

I find myself loving Pandora and Blip.fm.

Today I was chatting with Twitter about my music guilty pleasures. I think they become guilty pleasures when my husband makes fun of my for listening to them. You may have to check my blip.fm stream to get the whole story but let’s just say John Denver and Boys II Men were both mentioned.

Obviously, I’ll be inquiring about your guilty pleasures but we also need to talk about the Rolling Stones. Without further ado:questionmarks

1) What is you guiltiest, guilty pleasure song?*

2) What is your favorite song by The Rolling Stones?**

3) What is the best new album you have heard this year?

4) Name one song that changed your life.

5) What is your favorite song of all time?

*Don’t be shy. Would it make you feel better if I told you I had “Africa” by Toto on my iPod?

What if I told you I knew the harmonies?

** Funniest Stones Cover Ever. Start Me Up by The Folksmen from A Mighty Wind. (for some reason there is no video, but you can listen to it on YouTube.)

  1. The way you are mentioning that in your post..it’s like I should be ashamed of my Toto on my iPod..or that i hum the harmony when I’m walking…geeze.

  2. Ok, I personally love the song “Africa” and am quite sad that it is not on my ipod.

    1) I have lots to choose from, but I’m going with “Any Man of Mine” by Shania Twain. I don’t like country much, but I do like attitude!

    2) I do not like The Stones, but I do like “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

    3) Sadly, I think the only new album I have heard this year is Ingrid Michaelson, but it’s pretty good.

    4) “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. It introduced me to my all-time favorite band and the sublime songwriting of Neil Finn.

    5) “Better Man” by Pearl Jam

  3. 1) “Raspberry Beret” by Prince or “More Than a Feeling” by Boston

    2) Would you hate me if I said I’m not a Stones fan? The song I dislike the least is “Paint it Black.” I keep saying that one day I’m going to sit down and listen to some of their collection, but I haven’t been able to do it yet. That’s how I ended up liking Pink Floyd.

    3) Kings of Leon, Only By The Night. I couldn’t stop listening to it for the first two weeks after I got it. There’s something very refreshing and very eerie and very catchy about it. Can something be all three of those things at once?

    4) “Hunter” by Dido or “Hungry” by Kosheen – I listened to these on repeat when I was in the worst relationship of my life — engaged to be married, and dying to find a way out (even though I wasn’t really aware of it). The lyrics of those songs kept eating at me until I finally ended the engagement. Strangely, I don’t listen to either artist anymore, but those songs came along at just the right time.

    5) This one is tough. I’m going to have to say either “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen (because how can you NOT?), or “All at Sea” by Jamie Cullum, or “Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley.

  4. 1. guiltiEST? probably ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem

    2. dunno, maybe “Paint It Black”. Stones are great; I’ve just never been a huge follower/fan.

    3. so far it’s a toss-up between Dan Deacon-Bromst and Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion. Both in heavy rotation for me.

    4. ‘Tommy the Cat’ by Primus (featuring Tom Waits)

    5. For the sake of answering the question, I’ll say “Heavy Metal Drummer” by Wilco.

  5. 1) Miley Cyrus’ “See You Again,” which is the most listened to song on my iTunes. Dear Lord, forgive me.

    2) I only know the “you can’t always get what you want” one. Shameful? Probably.

    3) Currently digging Jesty Beatz’ hip-hop dream, “Deal or No Deal 2.” Full disclosure: He’s one of my college friends, but he’s gonna make it big soon. Heard it here first!

    4) “Just Watch the Fireworks” by Jimmy Eat World – along with the rest of the “Clarity” album.

    5) I once heard a great speech about how you should never, ever have a favorite song because it’s too limiting, & I try to stick with that. That said, I list REM’s “Nightswimming,” Des’ree’s “You Gotta Be” and Billy Joel’s “Vienna” among my tops.

  6. 1) Hmm….that’s toss up between anything by Miley Cyrus and Yearbook by Hanson

2)Paint it Black or Mother’s Little Helper

3)Nickelback’s new or Billy Ray Cyrus’s new one

4)Cowgirls Don’t Cry and You Can Let Go Now Daddy. ooh and Puff the Magic Dragon (I know, slightly more than one song but I can’t help myself)

5)Can’t pick just one but a few tops are “I Hate Myself For Loving You”, “Hard to Handle”, and “Daughter”

  7. Good one Sarah! I’ll play!

    5) What is your favorite song of all time?
Just One?!? That’s really really hard…I’m going to have to go with Thunder Road – Bruce Springsteen…but I could easily name twenty on any given day!

  9. I don’t know the answers to these questions. They are hard. Also, I am fickle and the answers change as I type. But I will tell you I found you through Suburb Sanity and that I have Clutch and Prokofiev in the same playlist. Does that help?

  10. Hmmm, interesting! I’d have to say

    1. Lime in the Coconut

    2. You Can’t Always Get What You Want

    3. The babies have stripped me of any conception of time, so I have no idea what came out this year.

    4. Ditto on #2 – You Can’t Always Get What You Want

    5. One by U2

  11. And then you can go to listentoyoutube.com and put in the youtube URL and get the sound ripped to an MP3 for your listening pleasure.

  12. 1) Womanizer by Britney Spears. Please don’t tell.

    2) Gimme Shelter

    3) The 59 Sound by the Gaslight Anthem. (It came out in 2008, technically, but I didn’t hear it until 2009.)

    4) This Year’s Love by David Gray

    5) What is your favorite song of all time?

  13. Oh Dearie, Dear— I know as soon as I hit “Submit Comment” I’ll change my mind, on one or more of the responses, but at this very minute:

1.) The Groove is in the Heart by Dee-Lite. LOVE that song.

2.) “Under My Thumb” is a huge fave of mine. She- Twin’s fave is “Paint it Black” He-Twin likes The Who.

3.) It’s only April. Haven’t heard a new album this year other than Robbert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine which is right fun.

4.) Changed my life? Hmmm…don’t know that any one has…but many have added to it greatly. “Wild Horses” has as a matter of fact…

    5.) Oooof, that’s tough. Can’t commit. I do dig a good version of Handel’s Hallelujah chorus…

  14. 1) What is you guiltiest, guilty pleasure song?*

for the record, I have Africa on my ipod, too, and will willingly admit it without remorse. However, I *AM* 100% ashamed to tell people I have Britney Spears ‘Womanizer’. *hides in shame*

    2) What is your favorite song by The Rolling Stones?**

I am quite unoriginal – Jumpin’ Jack Flash. Mostly because that movie is awesome.

    2) Beast of Burden is my definite favorite song. Hands down. I saw them live in 2002 and was disappointed that they didn’t play it.

    3) Kings of Leon’s new album is the bombdotcom.

    4) Joy Division– Love Will Tear Us Apart.

    5) New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle. I can listen to that on repeat FOREVER.

  16. Those are tough questions. I love music – almost all good music. One of the biggest joys for me right now is listening to music and dancing with my boy. I’ll try and answer:

    1. Hmmm, nope. Can’t answer, I don’t feel guilty about anything that I like. Who am I trying to impress?

    2. Another tough one. “Tumbling Dice” maybe?

    3. Justin Townes Earle – “Midnight At The Movies” or The Decemberists “Hazards of Love”

    2. Meh. Scorpio, maybe? Not a fan, really.

    3. I’ve been too preoccupied with not failing out of graduate school to really keep up with new stuff, but the best new-ish album that I’ve listened to this year was Metallica’s Death Magnetic. They actually sounded like Metallica.

    4. Smells Like Teen Spirit. To that point, I had only ever listened to country or oldies growing up because that was where I was from and what everyone listened to. That song opened my ears and paved the way.

Little love is so polite – Silversun Pickups

    5) What is your favorite song of all time?

Dogs and Thunder by Weeping Tile

  19. 1) I’m not sure that I feel guilty about any songs but many times I’ll be out and start dancing to something when I find out what I’m grooving on is really Britney or Justin. Kind of embarassing, Also I will always sing along and dance to “Kokomo” I can’t help it.

    2) Paint it Black

    3) Bela Fleck and the Flecktones new Christmas album “Jingle all the Way” my new favorite Christmas music!

    4) Easy “God is in” by Billy Jonas. It was played in my yoga class one day and when I got up from the mat there were two puddles on either side of where my head was. It really changed my outlook on life. I Immediatly bought the album and it still moves and uplifts me.

  21. I’m embarrassed by in love with the Honky Tonk Badonkadonk song.

The best Stones is Sympathy for the Devil. No doubt.

My favorite song is Hallelujah, Cohen of course, but even more, kd lang’s version. Heard her sing it live last year, and she made grown ups weep in the aisles.

  22. 1) What is you guiltiest, guilty pleasure song?*

“Photograph” by Def Leppard. Alternately, “Photograph” by Ringo Starr.

    2) What is your favorite song by The Rolling Stones?**

“Bell Bottom Blues,” Derek and the Dominos

    5) What is your favorite song of all time?

“Live in Japan,” Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins

  23. 1) Oooooooo, tough one. Not cheesy, but I am incapable of being in a bad mood when “Sweet Home Alabama” is on. I am forced to crank it up, drop the windows, belt it out and then comes the smile.

    2) My brother-in-law is going to kick my ass for saying this (and you might too), but, I don’t really dig The Stones. To make it worse, I’m wearing a Stones shirt right now…shame.

    3) The “remake” of Pearl Jam’s Ten. Fantastic. Was royally kickass the first time around, and it’s even more so now.

    4) Can’t pick one. Would probably be a Nirvana or Pearl Jam one though.

    5) I don’t have a favorite. There are too many. I can tell you have two “least favorites”. Not because they suck, but because they are tied to memories and people and made me bawl like a baby: Fred Bear by Ted Nugent (shut up, there’s a story behind it) and Far Behind by Candlebox. Far Behind comes on a LOT when I’m shopping/at the bar/etc., and I’m the freak who starts to tear up, slaps her hands over her ears, starts humming really loud and runs from the room. Maybe THAT’S why no one hits on me at the bar…

  24. 1. I can’t believe I’m admitting this but I totally have Spice Girls on my workout playlist. Look, they’re peppy. And when I’m slogging through an hour on the damn treadmill, I need peppy girl power.

Besides, someone needs to keep Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga company.

    2. Gimme Shelter or Paint it Black. I know, I know, pretty unoriginal.

    3. The Hazards of Love by The Decemberists or Sycamore Meadows by Butch Walker

    4. Cigarette Lighter Love Song by Butch Walker, Change by Blind Melon, Mouthful of Cavities by Blind Melon AND last but not least Brighter then Sunshine by Aqualung because it’s basically the love story of my husband and I.

    5. Ummm…can I do a top five or top ten? Any of the songs listed above, Don’t Move by Butch Walker, Alloway Groove by Paolo Nutini, Uniform Grey by Sarah Harmer, Blindsided by Bon Iver…I think I’ll stop now. I’m embarrassing myself.

  25. This is more a list of random picks than favorites.

1.) anything by Christina Aguilera, though I don’t feel guilty for anything anymore. If I like it, that means it’s good because I have such good taste. Duh.

2.) Sympathy for the Devil is the correct answer.

3.) The Airing of Grievances by Titus Andronicus.

4.) Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, just because I was whistling it all day today.

    2) What is your favorite song by The Rolling Stones?
I used to have a huge thing about the Stones, not so much any more. I’ll say “Heart of Stone” and “Sympathy for the Devil.”

    3) What is the best new album you have heard this year? I wish I had time for new music – I’m very intrigued by the Decembrists, but I haven’t had a lot of time to invest in getting to know them.

    4) Name one song that changed your life.
Changed my life? Nah, books changed my life, not songs. However Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel of Love” crystalized situations for me and helped me get out.
