I was complimenting Claudia on the lovely girly robot that she built with her Legos. I commented that both kids have really started building impressive things.
Well, of course I’m a good builder. I want to be an engineer, like Daddy.
I told her that it was a great idea. She would have to work very hard and learn a lot of math.
I know I’ll be a good engineer. She said. I already know how to read plans. You just look for the elevators.
I didn’t want to disappoint her and tell her that there is a lot more to a set of drawings than just locating the elevators and stairwells, but on the other hand, she is only five and that is probably a fairly unusual skill for a someone her age.
But then she blew me away.
If you want to put a pool in your plans you can do it two ways. You can either draw a pool or you can just put your building near a pool that is already there.

I like the way the girl thinks. That second way could save you a lot of time and money. I think she will be an excellent engineer. I suggest engineering design firms start recruiting her now.

Hmm…..I’d like a pool for our new house, can she figure that one out for me? I’d also like a small tower with a reading room in the top (or a room to lock the kids in).
I love smart kids.

I think I know someone who can help her with admission to a damn fine school of architecture.

She’s already a better engineer than I am!

Super-awesome. I really need her to draw a pool for me right now. ‘Tis hot in these parts.

Brilliant. This is the same way they get bathrooms into supermarkets, which explains why they’re always in some distant corner, behind three doors and across the loading dock.

I wish someone had thought to draw a pool next to my house.

And if you are really thrifty, build a building near a pool and an elevator.
The child is brilliant, of course.

I like the idea of moving my house closer to someone else’s pool. Hell, maybe I should just try squatting.
