I don't know about "Hooked on Phonics," but although I learned to read before I started school too (4 older siblings who played school with me every day when they came home helped) when I went to school we learned reading by phonics. "Sound it out!" our teacher would say. I always thought it was a good way to learn because once you have the basics down, you can pretty much figure out any word unless it's a real oddball. Nice to know!
