Day 5: Something I Hope to Do in My Life

Oh day 5, I like you. Something I hope to do in my life? That is not a scary writing prompt, and thank you for that.

This will be a happy post as my goal is attainable. Maybe not easily attainable as I have to actually leave the country to do it. I assume it will be expensive, but I have plenty of time to save up. I’m in no hurry.

I want to go see an opera at La Scala in Milan, Italy.

I have wanted to do this since I was in college. This is life list material here. I have seen operas in several different venues, but this is no ordinary theatre. This is La Scala.

This opera house has been around since 1778. Turandot premiered at La Scala. Salieri premiered an opera there. Verdi opened Nabucco, Otello and five other operas there. Toscanini worked there for years.

My friend Laurie says that if you look at the way you spend your time and your money you will be able to figure out what your passions are. Mine clearly involve food, travel, music and wine.

Yes. Italy sounds about right.

Following are the writing prompts for 30 Days of Truth, should you be interested in doing so yourself.

  1. Oh, I went to Milan once. And La Scala was closed! For remodeling! It nearly broke my heart because why else does one go to Milan? (Well, I did some fabulous shopping in the Golden Triangle, so that’s why else, but still.)

So now, Gonzo-like, I sit in my Kansas home and gaze wistfully eastward thinking, “I’m going to go back there someday.”

  2. I went to an opera at La Scala. My friend had a similar life goal and when we got to Milan, we went to get tickets. The tickets came to $80 per person and I told her I couldn’t do it (I was in my early 20s, a grad student with very little money.) We left the ticket office and got back out of the street and she suddenly said, “fuck it. Life is short. I want to do this and I’ll buy your ticket too.”

So she got us two seats in a private side balcony and we had a fun dinner beforehand. It was a really magical night. I hope it comes true for you too.

  3. Oh my Lord, that is gorgeous. It would be amazing to see an opera there.

  4. I’ve never been to an opera and have next to no interest in it but I am however thinking of what a rocking dress that place would give you an excuse to wear. Impressive establishment.

  5. Okay, let’s go!

What a cool goal. Italy is just a stunning country and I want to go back desperately…I’ve never been to Milan.

Price it and go for it!

The best way to find the money is to justify it one of two ways:
    1) Figure out how much a habit you used to have or have never had would cost you and use the “I’m a good girl (now) money”
    2) Figure out how much money you make in ad clicks or swag selling or something like that and put it aside for that.
