Five Things

1) I was pretty disappointed with the novel “The Marriage Plot” by Jeffrey Euginides. I loved his first two novels “The Virgin Suicides” and “Middlesex” and this one was just okay.

I am still convinced that the first half of the book was an exercise to see how many authors names he could fit into one story.

2) We are re-watching the entire series “The West Wing” in order. This is probably the third or fourth time we have done this and I’m not sick of it yet. I think Aaron Sorkin is a genius. If it weren’t for Mandy the pilot would be perfect.

3) My kids auditioned and got into a children’s choir. I am very proud of them and I was very excited until I realized that getting them to and from rehearsal on the same night as my rehearsals is going to be a logistical nightmare. I think I need one more car and probably a sister wife to make this work.

4) I went to a business lunch the other day and Savatage came up in casual conversation.

5) We are renovating our kitchen. It really needs it. Right now we have the original countertops that were put in the house when it was built in 1964. I remember my grandmother had these same counters back when I was a kid. I didn’t like them then either.

It turns out that there are about one bazillion options for cabinets, countertops and floors. One bazillion of each, so three bazillion total. How does a person pick just one style of cabinet? I am a decisive person and this is blowing my mind. I wanted red but my architect gave me a really unpleasant look when I said red so we picked black. Black is too dark due to our large number of upper cabinets. So I tried looking on Pinterest, which I don’t get AT ALL.

Now I’m thinking grey, but I also really love eggplant.

Not the vegetable. Eggplant is gross as a food. I love the color. But is it too much? I DON’T KNOW. This is why I am not in interior design. This is also why I married someone with good taste. He will pick something attractive. I will choose a nice wine to pair with dinner.

  1. I watch an episode of West Wing every day. It’s a sickness. I can’t stop. Love love love that show.

  2. I only wish I lived closer to you so I could come crash your West Wing party. When Ellie was in the hospital and I was pumping, I kept the DVD player next to the pump so I could zone out in front of the first two seasons of that show (all the while being annoyed at Mandy and glad when she disappeared without a trace at the end of the first season). (Sorry, was that TMI? You know how these things go…)

Also? I too love the COLOR eggplant, and loathe the vegetable. Nasty.

  3. I’m going to start another round of WW when Mr C abandons me for two weeks later this month. He loaded it on our server so no hassles with discs too.

  4. –>I love Pinterest.

Here is a site that has a lot of style inspiration for your kitchen:

  5. Eggplant is not gross when placed into its natural Parmesan context.

  6. Fuck your architect. Go red. It’s your kitchen.

  7. That’s a lot of red.

  8. Bummed to hear about Euginides’ new book. I loved his first two as well (especially Middlesex) and I was stoked to read the latest.

I love, love the West Wing. It’s on my list of series to rewatch. It’s funny because I don’t really like movies that much, but I do like TV shows — especially when i can sit down and watch a whole season in one sitting (as opposed to waiting each week for the live episode!) Although I do love Storage Wars. Especially the one I saw last night with Stewart Copeland from The Police!

    Aaaannnnd… now I’ve hijacked your comments. 😉

Congrats to the twins on their singing gig!

and p.s., just whatever you do, do not get off-white kitchen counters.

  9. Ooooh! Kitchen Remodelling!!! JELUS!

PS: We need to get together soon. I mean it goddammit. Don’t make me start an email thread, because I WILL SO DO THAT SHIT.

Your math is bad. That not 3 bazillion choices, it’s more than that because you can have them in different combinations. I think it might be 3 bazillion to the third power but I’m bad at this. It’s why I have a degree in art history and an empty room where my kitchen should be. For serious. It’s no all the fault of the choosing, though. Or at least to the kitchen choosing. For a long time (for the past 6 months until yesterday) we couldn’t go forward with the kitchen because there was a clawfoot tub against the wall where the sink will someday go. Now we can’t put in a kitchen because the furnace died and so we’re poor now and also: the choosing. OMG. For a while my husband was threatening to make the cabinets himself and I said “no” because I wanted cabinets sometime in the next 2 years and I was worried about foot-dragging but it turns out, that maybe the timeline isn’t the issue. I should have just let him make the things. (he has the chops – go check my facebook page for photos of the trim he’s doing). In the meantime, we’re just thankful that the house was a duplex and we can use the shitty upstairs apartment kitchen while we fail to commit.

West Wing – I wanna watch it now. I wish netflix had it on streaming.

  11. I was disappointed in The Marriage Plot as well. I was really looking forward to reading it so that was a big bummer.

  12. smart aleck says:

Eggplant parmigiana hero……sliced thin, fried just right, drowning in cheese and sauce…..on chewy/crunchy french bread…..

But I do agree with kitchen choices….there are a bazillion and we’ve done this twice. Luckily budget helped narrow some decisions. The architect is right on the no red for cabinets–one day you will want to sell your house and dropping the price because the new people will want another color sucks.
Red wine, on the other hand, goes with any kitchen.

  13. First, ugh, Mandy. THE WORST. Love Aaron Sorkin and my goal in life is to walk and talk in everything I do.

Second, I haven’t read The Marriage Plot yet, but was surprised at how much I enjoyed Middlesex, so I may have to give it a go.

    Third, I hate renovations.

  14. I named my daughter Ainsley. ‘Nuf said!

  15. Tommy Schlamme won two Emmys for Directing (in 2000 and 2001), and Christopher Misiano won a Directing Emmy in 2003. The West Wing’s only Emmy for Writing was in its first season, when Rick Cleveland and Aaron Sorkin shared the award for ” In Excelsis Deo “.

  16. Ritch’s parents got red countertops at the beach, it looks odd. Recently, we saw a kitchen that had black countertops with silver sparkles & I loved it. It made me want to re-do my kitchen.
