8 Things I Learned About Myself While Scanning Old Photos

1. I was neither fat nor ugly.

I’m not entirely sure why I thought I was.

2. I was also very, very tan.

3. I went to see the Circle Jerks at Jannus Landing. I have absolutely no recollection of the show but I do have the flyer and the ticket stub.

4. I kept a lot of flyers and ticket stubs.

5. I used to actually do things to my hair.

I don’t know if they were necessarily good things, but they were things.

  1. Its funny what stories old photos tell.

  2. I’m so jealous of your hair back then. My naturally bone-straight hair would never get big, no matter how much Aqua-Net and back-combing I did. Sigh. Woe is me and my flat-haired adolescence.

  3. Rockin’ Guns ‘n’ Roses t-shirt, lady. :) xoxo

  4. DANG. I turn 38 on Thursday and I’ve been writing a letter to myself of 20 years ago, including scanning photos. And the first thing that is in my letter is that I was not fat or ugly!

Get out of my brain crazy lady.

I think I have the same exact photo with sleeveless mock turtleneck and denim shorts. Why did we think that was cool?

  5. Janus Landing?? My neck of the beach.

Isn’t it crazy how we thought of ourselves back then? I wonder what my 62 year old self would tell my soon to be 42 year old self? Maybe to love ourselves more?

    FTR, you were adorable!

  6. This sounds like a good project for my upcoming 45th birthday (45?!?)

  7. I was at that show and I don’t remember it either! Yes, thanks so much for all of the pics! I suffered from a wave of old memories that was a bit mind blowing at times. Between you, Joe and myself we’ve really done some work on our timeline, eh? Wow. I’d forgotten how much fun it all was. Oddly, I feel reconnected to a bunch of folks because the posts…

  8. I loved seeing these photos go up on Facebook — thanks for sharing them! And I’m a sucker for nostalgia, too. :-)

  9. That was rock and roll hair.

What do “they say”.. I wish I was as fat as I thought I was in high school.. crazy.. and yes.. I saw lots of really cool shows.. ticket stubs are the greatest reminder..

  11. Pretty sure I could have told you most of this at the time – but I’m sure you wouldn’t have listened. I knew you were skinny, pretty, smart, tan, fun and very, very rock n roll all along!

  12. This is awesome. I thought I was fat and ugly in high school, too. I think the photographic evidence shows that I could not have been more wrong about the former, but that I might have a case for the latter. :-)

  13. If you don’t Aqua-Net the hell out of your hair for BlogHer, I’m going to be very, very disappointed.

  14. I’m so glad there are no pictures of me from high school floating out there in the internet ether. Then again, I’m not too happy with the pictures of me that are more recent. As for lessons? I’m gonna save that for my own blog post.

  15. Your old pics have me thinking: WTF was I thinking?!?! Hello?! McFly?!?! :-)

Its not that I consider those days as my peak but I can certainly say I have not had as much fun since those days. Hell every party I go to now most are leaving before midnight and are very reserved. I am always “last man standing”. I don’t know, even though I’m older and have experience under my belt I don’t feel that much different. It amazes me how when I hang out with some of the people from back then they strike me as way older than myself. Like Ben calls them, “those people” and he means that in terms of almost parental, far removed from aything like they used to be. The hell with that! In my humble opinion one can be wiser via life experiences but I’ll never completely grow up!

  16. #1 is sooooo true! I spent so many years thinking I was fat and ugly. To know then what I know now.

  17. You had the type of hair I always coveted.

    Sigh.

    You hottie you.

  18. Your Mother says:

How bizarre Sarah – I was roaming the halls of your high school last night thinking about your years there. I’m glad that the good memories outweigh the bad!

  19. Apryl's Antics says:

Loved Jannus Landing. I saw the Butthole Surfers, School of Fish, and Blues Traveler (Sheryl Crow opened for them) there. How I miss it!

  20. really nice and entertaining blog, =) got here from eAve
