I was gone for less than two hours.

This morning I went to the dentist. I drive all the way across town to go to him, because he tells me I have pretty teeth, and I’m a sucker for that sort of thing.

But that is not the point. The point is that I left the house at 10:03. I finished at the dentist’s office at 11:30 (no cavities, pretty teeth, remember?) and I called my Mom to check on The Goon Squad.

My Mom: We’re great. They still haven’t napped. Oh, and Claudia can say purple.

Me: What?

My Mom: Claudia can say purple.

So, I make my Mom put Claudia on the phone.

Me; Hi, Claudia. It’s Mommy.

Claudia: Ma ma, ma ma, huhhhhhhhh.

My Mom (in the background): Claudia, say purple.

Claudia: Ahhhhhhhhh.

My Mom (in the background): Claudia, what color is your cup?

Claudia: Purple.

Me: Did you say purple?

Claudia: Purple.

My Mom: Claudia, can you say blue?

Claudia: Blue. Ma ma. Ma ma.

Then I freaked out and told her how great she was as she babbled. I was gone for less than two hours and my daughter learned two new words. I can’t imagine what it’s like to go to work in the morning and come home every night to two kids that are taller and smarter than the kids you just saw earlier that day.

The Squad also just really started calling me Ma ma. They have been calling Gabe “Da” for what seems like an eternity. Right now, it feels great to hear it, but I’m sure the day will come very soon when I wonder why I ever wanted them to learn my name. The same way I am sorry I ever taught Ian the word “again”.

  1. Purple is hard to say too!

  2. The girl has got mad skills.

  3. Robey picks up new words at a snail’s pace. Me? I could leave for two weeks, and he’d still be saying the same 20 words he said when I left. Purple is not in his vocabulary.

  4. Yeah, just wait until they learn to say, “I hate you! I wish I was never born!”

    Ah… the memories.

  5. Oh no – here come the words. How quickly they will acquire “no…”
